What makes a site slow

It is rarely just one thing. The most common causes are a server that responds late, too much code loaded on every page, unoptimised images, fonts and scripts from third-party services and, on WordPress sites, themes and plugins that add work to every request. That is why I always start from measurement and diagnosis, not from a list of tricks.

Core Web Vitals

These are the metrics Google uses to assess the loading experience: how long it takes to show the main content, how quickly the page responds to clicks and how stable it stays while loading. I measure them both in the lab and with real visitor data, because the two values often differ.

Measure to improve

Before and after every intervention I measure again with the same tools, so you know exactly what changed. I do the same with this site: see the GTmetrix and Google PageSpeed Insights reports.

Frequently asked questions

Performance gains can be measured right after the work. Real visitor data, the data Google uses, updates over a few weeks instead.

I work on sites built with the most common technologies, WordPress included; after the analysis I'll tell you what is possible and what is worth doing.

Often not: caching hides problems without solving them. First you find the cause, whether it is the server, a slow query, a heavy theme or an external script.
